We want you to be able to come out and have a blast, no matter what, and familiarizing yourself with gameplay tips can make all the difference. Let’s jump in to the next pickleball pro tips from Parham Bridges and get ready to step up our game!

It’s All in the Dink

A dink is a soft shot that lands just over the net in the kitchen. This is perhaps the most important shot in a pickleball game. You can practice dinking when warming up or cooling down – this involves controlling the ball with a gentle touch which allows you to place a strategic shot that forces your opponents into a less desirable return

Focus on the Ball

Just as with most sports that involve a ball, keeping your eye on the ball is truly the key to success. Watching the ball hit the paddle can ensure that you get the shot you want and the placement you seek.

Paddle Up

One of the most key components of playing consistently well is to hold your paddle up in front of your chest. Don’t allow the paddle to drop down to your thigh. Keeping your paddle ready for action helps you stay prepared for quick volley and allows your reflexes to return the shots without the extra time spent to bring your pedal back up to your waist area.

Communicate!

If you are playing doubles, communication is key to when you are going after the ball. Even if you’re stepping back and not going after it, saying, “Mine,” or “Yours,” keeps your teammate informed of your intentions. Decide before each game who is going to be responsible for the middle shots and how you’re going to navigate the court. In pickleball, your partner changes often, so a quick discussion can help prevent mishaps and the misfortune of each of you going after the same ball. Of course, no team sport would be worth the effort without a good dose of encouragement. Cheer on your teammate and most often, you will see better results out of both of you!

Be Patient and Play Smart

Many new players are stuck in the kitchen too early and that rushing ends up in a lost point. Pay attention to the ball bounce and move in with control, patience, and intention. Patience can help you enjoy the game and win more consistently. It’s also smart to patiently plan your return, control your power, and be strategic. Watching your opponent is also a good way not only to learn various strategies of play, but also to determine how to most effectively defeat them.  All these strategies require patience and vigilance. A little goes a long way!
